“Curlews rescued from canine threat. The final Curlew chicks of the season from the Natura 2000 Nadnoteckie Łęgi site hatched in our incubator. This was a special clutch that came into our care after a nest was destroyed by dogs accompanying a farmer mowing a neighbouring meadow. The incident was recorded by our camera. The parent birds abandoned the nest. One egg was completely destroyed; the remaining three appeared intact. As an emergency measure, the eggs were placed in the incubator, and after two weeks, two chicks hatched. Unfortunately, the embryo in the third egg did not survive. The surviving chicks will spend a few more weeks in the aviary under the supervision of our collaborating veterinarian. Once they are capable of flight, they will be released alongside other curlews reared in our programme.
Meanwhile, along the Noteć River, adult birds that lost their broods are beginning to gather ahead of migration to their wintering grounds. Only a few birds that managed to protect their offspring will remain in the meadows.
Active conservation of the Eurasian Curlew in the Natura 2000 Nadnoteckie Łęgi area is being carried out on behalf of the Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Poznań, a partner in the project “Kulik WIELKI zagrożony. Ochrona kulika wielkiego Numeniusarquata w Polsce” [Curlew in danger. Protection of the Eurasian Curlew (Numeniusarquata) in Poland], coordinated by PTOP – the Polish Society for Bird Protection.”
